Aging Myths - Not All Memory Loss is Caused by the Aging Process!

Even if we try to do everything we can to try and stay young for a longer period of time, there will come a time that no matter what, the clock simply won't stop ticking for any of us. There are a lot of things that change as we grow older even when we practice many different anti-aging products and procedures. One common thing a lot of older people experience is some sort of loss of memory.

People become more forgetful when they age like forgetting where the keys are, needing a little time to remember what they were about to do and sometimes taking longer to figure out someones name. These are common and simple things that generally will not interfere with daily life. But, there are reasons that are medical that cause loss of memory that can be harmful to a person's health and are not age related.

The following medical ailments can cause substantial memory loss.

Alzheimer's disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, hypothyroidism, being depressed, being dehydrated, fibromyalgia and any kind of vitamin B deficiency. All of these things can cause severe memory loss if untreated.

The most damaging of all of these of course would be Alzheimer's and cause devastating memory loss. Symptoms that those with this disease can exhibit would be having problems remembering the most common words when they try to talk, always misplacing things that are used on a daily basis, severe mood swings and not being able to remember to get to a familiar place like the store or even how to get home.

If someone has untreated high blood pressure this will lead to the arteries becoming hardened. This then can lead to problems with their circulation. This then restricts the blood flow to a person's brain and can lead to strokes as well as memory loss.

If a person has untreated diabetes they can suffer memory loss because diabetes can cause circulation problems as well and can lead to neuropathy. Diabetes also produces an over abundance of cortisol. This is a stress hormone that will eventually cause memory loss.

When a person's thyroid gland isn't producing enough hormones it's called hypothyroidism. This can cause impairment to a person's cognitive abilities. Metabolism is controlled by the thyroid and problems with this can cause problems with hormones which can lead to dementia which is a severe form of memory loss.

A person that suffers from severe depression and is left untreated can affect a person's neurotransmitters in their brain and this can easily lead to some moderate to severe memory loss.

When someone becomes severely dehydrated they can become disoriented and confused but it can also be a cause for memory problems especially if they are on medication. The medication will end up becoming concentrated in the blood because of the dehydration and this will affect the memory.

The reason why people with fibromyalgia can suffer memory loss is because this causes so much pain at times that they are unable to sleep and when you are unable to sleep your memory is going to be affected.

If a person has a deficiency of B vitamins especially B12, the red blood cells as well as nerve cells lose their protection that B12 gives them. So then the brain will be deprived of these cells which will lead to memory loss.

Other conditions that can cause memory loss other than aging would be cancer and the treatments that come with cancer, AIDS, too low amounts of the good cholesterol, brain tumors, alcoholism, Lyme disease and trauma to the head.
